Most of us can remember back far enough to when our skin started breaking out for the first time. For some, it was an inconvenience that only happened every so often; for others, it may have been a huge time in your life that we wish you could forget. No matter how acne affected you as a teen, when your kid starts battling acne you want to help out any way you can.
The first thing to remember is that teen acne is pretty much inevitable. Hormones cause the whole body to go haywire, and there is not much anyone can do about that. However, there are things that you can do to help your teen survive this unpleasant time.
Try to empathize with your teen. Just when appearance starts to matter, that’s when acne usually rears its ugly head. Pun intended. By helping your teen understand that you are there to help, you will be a positive light during this trying time. Studies reveal that teen acne often leads to poor self-esteem, and with bullying on the rise in schools today, you want to offer support for your child.
Help your child by offering a healthy diet. A diet full of greasy, high-fat foods will play a huge role in acne. It is imperative to remember that skin is the largest organ in the body. The skin reacts to how well or how badly we treat it – from the inside as well as from the outside. By encouraging your child to eat a healthy diet, you will benefit your child’s entire body.
Remember that stress also affects acne. During the teen years, many things cause stress. When negative emotions surround friends, sports, grades, family, or self-worth stress has negative effects. Helping your child reduce stressful situations can prevent acne flare-ups.
Seek the advice of a trusted dermatologist. Thanks to advances in treatment, virtually all cases of acne can be successfully treated.
