Skin Tags

Skin tags are a common occurrence among people of all ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomical backgrounds. Being more of a nuisance than anything else, skin tags are tiny, benign growths that protrude or “hang” off the skin. Skin tags are connected to the skin by a thin stalk called a peduncle, and they are generally found in sites on the body where skin-to-skin friction occurs or where clothing rubs against the skin. The most common places to find a skin tag are on the neck, underarms, upper chest area, and the groin. Many people can go their whole lives with skin tags and not be disturbed by them. However, some skin tags are bothersome and/or cause feelings of self-consciousness, and in these cases, people often look for ways to remove them.

One quick search on Google will reveal “at home” ways to remove skin tags. While some of these methods may work, it is always recommended that you seek the expertise of a professional dermatologist for skin tag removal. Trying to remove a skin tag yourself with creams, lotions, tape, string, or a DIY removal kit is never advised. These methods can often cause harm to the skin, leading to infection and the need for medical intervention.

It is also important to note that while most skin tags are harmless, it is vital that you have a doctor confirm that your skin tag is benign before removal. An unsuccessful “at home” removal that goes wrong can lead to serious issues if the skin tag was not a benign growth.
