There are times in your life when you willingly strap a mask over your face to have fun. Halloween and masquerade balls are two types of events where a mask is acceptable and fun. Another occasion that you may wear a mask is during your pregnancy. However, this type of mask is never invited or fun.

The medical name for a pregnancy mask is melasma. It is a common skin condition that will cause you to have brown or gray patches on your skin. The common areas for this to occur are on your cheeks, nose, forehead, chin or upper lip. Melasma is not isolated to pregnancy. It can also be triggered by sun exposure, heredity, medications and hormones (especially during pregnancy).

If you have melasma or a pregnancy mask you will have dark splotchy spots appear around your face. When you are pregnant your body will produce more hormones. These hormones will cause an increase in your pigmentation. It is quite common for this to happen. Almost 50% of pregnant women have some signs of it.

To prevent getting the “mask of pregnancy” you can do a few things.

  • Always wear broad-spectrum SPF when you are outside.
  • Stay out of the sun when it is brightest.
  • Wear protective gear such as wide-brimmed hats or baseball caps.

If you have melasma, contact Dr. Weisman at Medical Dermatology Specialists today. She will provide you with the treatment you need regardless of your severity.

Our Patient Reviews

Dr. Weisman was very professional, friendly, and engaged in conversation with terminology I would understand. Her beside manner was, quite frankly, surprising! It was one of the most comfortable visits I've ever experienced with a doctor.

I truly cannot express how thankful I am for this practice. I have been treated with kindness and immense care by every staff member I have encountered here. The nurses and assistants are beyond attentive and genuinely care for the patient. I have just received a treatment plan from Dr. Laura Biehl, and even if this particular treatment plan doesn't provide me relief, I am confident that Dr. Biehl will work to figure out a solution. She is extremely knowledgeable, listens to patient concerns, and takes time to answer patient questions. Dr. Biehl, and this practice are true gems. If you have any dermatological issues this practice is absolutely the best of the best.
