A pilonidal cyst is an incredibly painful cyst that develops at the base of the tailbone and can become infected and filled with pus. Once infected, the pilonidal cyst become a pilonidal abscess – and becomes painful to the point of debilitation. While many doctors think that a pilonidal cyst is actual an ingrown hair that has become infected, that is not the case with everyone. In fact, during World War II, more than 80,000 soldiers developed pilonidal cysts that were believed to be caused by the irritation from riding in bumpy Jeeps. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, Dr. Jamie Weisman does not believe in a one-size fits all approach to dermatology. While there may be commonalities in certain disorders, like pilonidal cysts, they are not all brought on by the same causes.
People who have suffered from them have described Pilonidal cysts as the most painful experience of their life. While they are often nuisances at first because sitting and riding in the car are difficult, once they become abscessed there is no relief from the pain. The abscess requires draining or lancing in order for it to improve. Many times with large pilonidal cysts, they require surgical removal. Any pain, swelling, or redness at the bottom of the spine (right above the crack of the buttocks) needs to be addressed by a doctor. Because Dr. Jamie Weisman specializes in conditions related to the skin, as a dermatologist she can often offer more specialized treatment for painful pilonidal cysts.
