One of the most prevalent viruses in the United States is the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 100 known strains of the virus and nearly half of them can affect the genital area. A common way that HPV impacts the genitals is the development of genital warts, which may show up as one wart or a group of warts.
At first, people who contract the virus do not have any symptoms of infection. Warts may not appear for several weeks or even months after exposure to the virus. Signs and symptoms of genital warts include:
- Small red bumps that seem to be growing larger
- Clustered formations of bumps that look like cauliflower
- Itching
- Burning
- Bleeding
For females, genital warts frequently appear on the vagina, cervix, groin, or vulva. For males, the penis, scrotum, and groin are impacted. For both male and females, warts can appear in the mouth as well.
Warts are likely contagious and need to be treated promptly. We realize that people are often embarrassed to seek treatment for genital warts.
