There are so many breakthrough medicines on the scene now, with many more coming soon. This is a huge relief for those who suffer from skin conditions. Adult atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, is a condition of itchy inflammation of the skin. It usually develops in childhood and is genetic. The main symptom is a rash that first appears on the arms or behind the knees, but can present anywhere on the body.
Mild conditions can be treated by avoiding harsh soaps or other irritants. Some topical creams or ointments may provide some relief from the itching. Typically, people that have this condition are also predisposed to other allergies, including food allergies and contact allergies like dog dander or pollen.
How Do These Medications Work?
For adults or children over the age of 6, there is a newer medication called Dupixent that may help. Dupixent is taken by a small injection into the subcutaneous areas of the body, which is under the skin.
Dupixent is a biologic, which means it works at the cellular level. It blocks a type of protein in the body. This specific protein is working with the immune system in the body to fight off viruses or bacteria.
These biological drugs are also helping psoriasis, asthma and other immune disorder conditions in the body. You do not have to suffer in silence any longer. A visit to your dermatologist can help with the itching, flaking, inflamed and painful skin problems you may be facing.
Eczema vs. Psoriasis
Psoriasis usually presents as red, scaly patches of dry, cracked skin. Eczema normally is brown-gray or red in appearance and may have pustules. Eczema tends to form where the skin folds. Additionally, while both conditions cause itching, the itching associated with eczema tends to be more extreme.
