An outbreak of head lice in a child’s school class may be on the top list of things parents fear during the school year, however, it is one of the most popular infestations among children in large settings. Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. Gross! Head lice are very easily transferred from one person to another with direct contact (heads touching while sharing a seat on the bus, sharing a hair brush) and also through non-direct touching (shared towels or pillows). While the infestation is enough to make even those with nerves of steel tremble, head lice is easy to treat when the necessary steps are taken.
At Medical Dermatology Specialists, we offer effective treatment for head lice as well as pediatric skin conditions. While there are a number of “at home” or natural remedies that many people use to treat head lice infestations, there is little to no evidence that they are effective. A prescription treatment is the best method for killing lice and their eggs. Many over the counter medications are effective at killing the lice that are alive, but they do not kill the eggs; therefore, another treatment must be performed at a strategic time in order to kill the eggs. If the specific time window passes, the entire process for killing the infestation must start over.
Dr. Jamie Weisman and her entire staff understand that if a child or family member has head lice, everyone involved wants it resolved immediately. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, we offer effective solutions for those with head lice to kill the insects and their eggs. Call right away if you or your child has signs of head lice.
