Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that affects millions of people in the United States. While many people associate eczema as a childhood condition, it can continue throughout adulthood and affect a person’s quality of life. The changing of the seasons is a common trigger for eczema flare-ups to occur. A flare-up is when the skin condition worsens, often dramatically, and must be carefully monitored and treated. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, our experienced board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jamie Weisman founded our practice to provide a new level of care to patients with skin conditions and diseases. We are equipped to give you the relief you need and deserve from your eczema.
Changing seasons affect different people in different ways. With cooler, drier air becoming the norm as fall and winter roll in, some people are now finding relief for their eczema. The humidity is no longer causing their skin to sweat profusely and flare up, and they are able to go outside for enjoyment. However, colder months can also affect eczema sufferers in a much different way. Because the air is dry and holds less moisture, this can cause many with eczema to have flare-ups because of severely dry skin. There are some precautions to take: avoid wearing wool or rough fabrics, dress warmly when going outside but dress in layers to prevent sweating and itching, protect sensitive areas where eczema is prevalent (such as the face and hands), and moisturize the body as much as possible.
There is no one size fits all treatment for any skin condition, and Dr. Weisman and her medical team are proud to offer personalized care for each patient that comes in to Medical Dermatology Specialists in Atlanta. If your eczema or your child’s eczema is affecting quality of life, please call our practice and schedule an appointment. Dr. Weisman is a true advocate for your health and will take the time to properly diagnose your specific eczema triggers and provide a treatment plan that will give you and those you care about the long-term relief you deserve.
