Drink More water

There are plenty of reasons to make water your beverage of choice. It reduces your intake of sugary beverages, lowers your overall calorie consumption and provides a way for the body to filter our blood through the kidneys. So, while proper hydration benefits your insides, current research doesn’t have a strong connection between drinking water and skin appearance.

Keeping Your Skin Hydrated and Healthy

Just because water intake isn’t the primary factor in plump skin, it doesn’t mean water isn’t a factor. In fact, many of the ways to protect your skin involve how you use water on the outside. Some of the best ways to keep your skin supple and hydrated include:

Turning down your water heater
Hot water strips the skin of the oils it needs to protect itself. Even if you have oily skin, the hot water can still strip away too much, causing your skin to try to repair itself by producing even more oil.

Using gentle products
Retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids disrupt your skin barrier, creating the conditions for dryness and irritation. Alcohol strips your skin of natural oils, and fragrance can further irritate damaged skin or cause allergic reactions.

Creating a moisture barrier
Moisturizers create a barrier by temporarily sealing the skin. Some moisturizers also encourage moisture to migrate to the skin’s upper layers, resulting in a smooth, supple appearance. Applying moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp will help it absorb better and give you better protection.

When To Consult a Dermatologist

The direct benefits of water to your overall health are well known, and you should continue to drink water to benefit your overall health. It can be frustrating when you use the other strategies to keep your skin in great shape, but it doesn’t improve. If you continue to experience dry, flakey or irritated skin, rashes or any other skin problems, it’s best to contact a professional. Dr. Weisman at Atlanta’s Medical Dermatology Specialists takes a comprehensive approach to resolving skin conditions. If you need help clearing up your skin, contact the office today to book your appointment.

Our Patient Reviews

Dr. Weisman was very professional, friendly, and engaged in conversation with terminology I would understand. Her beside manner was, quite frankly, surprising! It was one of the most comfortable visits I've ever experienced with a doctor.

Waquele H.
I truly cannot express how thankful I am for this practice. I have been treated with kindness and immense care by every staff member I have encountered here. The nurses and assistants are beyond attentive and genuinely care for the patient. I have just received a treatment plan from Dr. Laura Biehl, and even if this particular treatment plan doesn't provide me relief, I am confident that Dr. Biehl will work to figure out a solution. She is extremely knowledgeable, listens to patient concerns, and takes time to answer patient questions. Dr. Biehl, and this practice are true gems. If you have any dermatological issues this practice is absolutely the best of the best.
