Diaper rash is a common irritation of the skin that affects up to 35 percent of the population under two years of age. While severe diaper rash does not affect the majority of children, most children will suffer from a mild form of diaper rash at least once before they are trained to use the toilet. Luckily, for most children with diaper rash. it can be treated with an over the counter ointment that soothes the burning sensation and helps to heal the irritation.
Diaper rash is a form of dermatitis that results from wearing a wet or soiled diaper for too long and/or skin sensitivity. Diaper rash causes extreme discomfort to babies because their little bottoms feel as though they are on fire, and continuing to use their diapers only adds to the problem. Home remedies such as air-drying between diaper changes, frequent diaper changes, using water in place of wet wipes, and the use of ointment is generally effective for parents. However, it is severe diaper rash that is more difficult to treat and causes much more pain and discomfort to the child.
One of the major causes of a regular, mild diaper rash turning into a much more severe diaper rash is that the infection can easily spread to the surrounding areas. The diaper rash may begin around the crease of the legs, but it can quickly spread to the buttocks, thighs, and genitals. Diapers provide a very moist and warm environment that is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. In most cases of a sever diaper rash, there is a yeast infection present that is compounding the infection and making the skin even more sensitive. An antifungal cream and antibiotics can generally take care of relieving a severe diaper rash in a matter of days. With vigilance, the diaper rash can be avoided.
